What's New in the SportDOG SD-825X
Up to 21 levels of continuous STIM or 7 levels of momentary STIM with either non-stimulating tone or vibration (depending on transmitter mode)
Backward-compatible with previous SD-825 series remote collars
The SportDOG SportHunter SD 825X is an incredibly versatile training collar and a good choice for all-around use. This introduction to the long-range SportHunter family is designed by hunters like you. The SportDOG Sporthunter SD 825X is a longer range version of the SD-425X.
The 825X has all the features of the SD 425X but has a slightly larger transmitter with a more powerful antenna for longer range, perfect for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with medium range working dogs.
Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof and submersible.
The comfortable "soft coat" transmitter finish makes this unit a pleasure to handle.
The No-look design allows you to keep an eye your dog and not on your transmitter.
The low continuous stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-825X are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.
You can customize your SportDOG Field Trainer SD-825X to match your training preference. It comes set up in MODE-5 (a 21-level continuous one dog collar with non-stimulation tone), but it can easily be changed into 7 different modes with different button configurations.
Gun Dog Supply Exclusive: One Hour BASIC OBEDIENCE Ecollar Training Video
$40 Value -- You get this FOR FREE when you buy this ecollar.
We are proud to announce that Professional Dog Trainer Robin MacFarlane is working with us! We just wrapped another video shoot, and are launching her latest DVD.
What's interesting about these videos is that Robin has never worked with these dogs before, and several younger dogs have never been trained on an ecollar.
First, Robin walks you through the basic obedience commands showing what proper form looks like.
Next, Robin shows how she introduces the ecollar to two of Steve's puppies, Jack & Tilly, and shows you how to find the right STIM level to communicate with your dog.
She then turns that into a lesson for your dog to recognize that STIM means pay attention to your handler and expands that into a basic recall.
Additional segments include teaching RECALL, PLACE, SIT, and HEEL.
Easy to upgrade to 2 or 3 dogs without loss of tone/vibration feature
Up to 21 levels of continuous stimulation or 7 levels of momentary stimulation depending on transmitter mode
DryTek waterproof design -- submersible to 25 ft.
2-hour quick charge Li-Ion batteries that are also user replaceable (3-5 year lifespan with proper care)
50- to 70-hour run time on a full charge
LED battery charge indicator lets you know transmitter is finished charging

Weighs only 4 ounces
Measures 7" x 1 3/4" x 7/8" with antenna

You also have the option of Continuous and Momentary with Tone and the ability to activate/deactivate the Locator Beeper (sold separately).
Change MODES in seconds by setting the transmitter dial to the mode you want. Next press the recessed button on the back of the transmitter. Stimulation from the SportDOG SD-825X

Intensity levels can be quickly adjusted with the dial on the side of the transmitter, meaning you can instantly adjust intensity whenever distractions increase
Teach yardwork/obedience and enforce known commands with lower levels of stimulation
Use higher levels to stop unwanted chasing or to overcome strong distractions
Up to 21 levels of continuous stimulation or 7 levels of momentary stimulation depending on which transmitter mode you choose
SportDOG SD-825X Range
Up to 1/2-mile range which is ample for off-leash dog training or for hunting with medium range field dogs. Actual range depends on training conditions, including weather, terrain, the presence of cover, etc.
This is the big brother of the 425X. The 825X has a very similar setup as far as stimulation modes and training options. The difference between them is range. This is a half mile range system compared to about 500 yards on the 425X. I prefer it, especially for bird dog folks. 500 yards is a little tight for a bird dog in my opinion. And for not that much more money, you can get the extra range and still have all the same features.
Another thing that I like about the 825X is that the transmitter is a little bit bigger. It fits in my hand better than the 425X. I like the 425X, but the dial and transmitter size are a little small for me.
SportDOG knows how to make dials better than anybody, and that's a big deal to me. If you are used to a dial on a transmitter and you prefer that over some of the newer setups out there, SportDOG makes the best dials. They feel great and it's probably my favorite thing about this particular collar.
I really like the size of the collar. It's small. It's going to fit most dogs really well. Exact same size collar as you've got in the 425X. So, the difference in range is going to be right here in the transmitter.
The SD-825X offers a lot of different stimulation choices. It also has tone and vibration on the dial, which allows you to have both tone and vibration at the same time in several different mode setups.
Another feature is the ability to change stimulation on the collar. This is something exclusive to SportDOG. When you buy this collar and you take it out of the box, it's going to be in what's called their medium stimulation setting. If you have a very sensitive dog and you need to turn it down, there is a low stimulation option. It doesn't change anything on the transmitter, but what it does is it changes the output on the collar. It steps everything down. With the majority of the dogs that I've worked with, the medium setup works great.
Overall, the SD-825X is just an all-around great collar.
I would highly recommend this product to every dog owner and encourage everyone to watch the training video. It is incredibly effective in training a dog and amazing the results and how fast the dog learns and obeys. This collar has allowed my dog to be off leash at a young age and run freely and gives me the confidence that he will come back when called. I have been extremely satisfied and would purchase this product again!

Highly recommend this collar for basic training and obedience!
February 14, 2021
I had a SportDOG e-collar years ago, but when looking for an e-collar to train my Airedale Terrier, I researched different brands and models before deciding on this one. I'm so glad I went with it! It may not be the most fancy one out there, but it works great and our pup responds well to it. I began using it when she was around 5 months old, training her on the leash so that she understands what the e-collar signals mean (this is very very important! The dog has to know what you are asking of her/him!). Two months later, she is great off leash and responds to my calls really well, mostly without even needing to use a nick or tone from the collar. I will say our pup is a very quick learner and generally very responsive, so I don't know how this collar would work for a more stubborn dog, but the previous SportDOG that I had was for a very stubborn Weimaraner, and it worked well for him.
So far we have used this out in the field both pheasant and duck hunting, and it works great for that purpose. Also, we live on 3 unfenced, wooded acres, and we just have the collar on her when she's out alone, just in case she strays too far. That seldom happens, but if she doesn't come immediately when called (probably because she's found a tasty deer poop treat), just a nick on a low setting from the SportDOG brings her running home.
We've had below 0Ëš temperatures the past few days, and we've been out running/skiing in heavy snow. Yesterday when we got back from our run, I noticed that the collar receiver had an ice crust built up on part of it, but it was still working fine! The batteries hold a charge for a REALLY long time! I only charge the units once a week or so. They charge very quickly, and thus far this extremely cold weather doesn't seem to have affected the battery life.
She's also worn it in the river with no problems, and I've dropped the transmitter in the snow and water and suffered no ill effects. Definitely waterproof!
And as you can see in the pictures, the collar blends in well with the black fur, you can hardly tell she's wearing it!
Pros
Holds charge well, both transmitter and receiver are small and lightweight, waterproof, excellent training tool
Cons
Wish that changing the mode setting were a bit easier/quicker, but for the price this is a fine compromise.
Also, my biggest gripe is that collar doesn't come with a keeper for the excess strap, so it either flops around (and the dog chews on it) or you have to lace it back through the buckle. I ended up sewing an elastic keeper that works great, so it's really not a big deal in the end.

Improved hearing
December 1, 2022
Bought this for a stubborn dog, put it on him, he got out of sight and wouldn't come, I shocked him once in a low setting, he yelp. I called twice he showed up in less than twenty seconds. I have rarely had to use it since then. His hearing has greatly improved
Pros
Fits good, works dependable,
Cons
The manual could explain functions better, for different levels. It might be on the cd , but it would be nice to read it.

SportDOG Training Collar Saved My Sanity
November 25, 2022
With the SD-825X Training Collar, I was able to get my 11 month old Aussie-Doodle to stop running the local deer population and any horse or cow she comes across. She now hears and obeys my commands. I found the wide range of adjustable stimulation very useful in overcoming any distraction. The collar and controller are well designed and made from quality materials. Much was accomplished using this product in just 2 weeks. Thanks

great training collar
June 15, 2022
It is small and light. The collar is very programable . In the 1-7 stimulation mode just be aware that level 1 is still quite hot. I found it necessary to program to one of the modes with 21 levels of stimulation. Even then the low level one does get the puppies ( 7 month old English setter ) attention. That said with a little practice and reading the directions several times the collar is easy to understand and works well
Pros
Controller is light, ergonomic, and easy to use. I really like this unit. Over the years I have used many and this will be a go to training unit
Cons
I wish there was a lower level of stimulation that low level one in 21 mode. Level 1 in a 7 mode is too hot. That said low level 1 in 21 mode is not too hot but a lower level would be nice in a young dog.

This is an absolute must have piece of equipment for training stubborn dogs. I bought one for my last dog and it lasted 10 years. I like the new one better as it is very easy to use as a result of design changes to the controls. The book and video that come with it provide all the information you need to use the collar correctly and train your dog the right way.

SportDOG SD-825X
September 6, 2021
Bought this to train a new puppy I will bring home in November. Great product! Easy to use and is very effective. My daughter & I have been using the GunDOG collar on her labs. One responds to just the beep and the other has to be up high in the shock zone. That's what I like about this collar. You can fine tune the settings to your dog's sensitivity.
Pros
Easy to use and charge. Can be set to each dogs sensitivity. Has a good range, especially for training.
Cons
Can?t think of any.

Young puppy, 4 mos. old and was tentative in using an E-collar on him but being close to a road I wanted assurance he would come when called. I don't let my dogs run loose but several times a week take them for long walks and allow them the freedom to run under my supervision. I set it on vibration and after our first session he responded to whistle with immediate straight line returning to me. I've only had to repeat it on two different occasions when he hesitated and both times the correction was successful and have not needed further reinforcement. I live adjacent to a mix of woods and brush country and have let him explore with me and even when out of site he responds immediately to the whistle.
Pros
Multiple levels of stimulation
Good range
With practice controls can be manipulated by touch without direct visualization
Cons
Takes a while reviewing and practicing (not on the dog) to determine how to set up individual modes and stimulation levels
Though the collar in plenty long enough and adequate number of adjustment holes, the length on a young dog leaves the end loose with no way to further attach it to itself. I didn't want to cut it shorter because the pup is still growing but he began chewing on it so I used a wire tie to secure its terminal end on the collar. It would be nice if there was an adjustable clip to secure the end to collar.

Gundog Supply gave rapid quality service. The 825x has less range than my previous collar but I didn't notice the difference in the field. I like the handheld control and the collar worked fine. It's a bit smaller than my previous Sportdog collar which worked good for 6 years but that should make it easier on the dog.
Pros
works well
smaller size
more features
came with lanier
Cons
less range but seemingly enough
button on side hard to work with gloves

There doesn't seem to be a lot of bells and whistles with this e-collar, however it seems to be very good quality. I like the on off button on the collar and the tone and vibration options are nice. Happy with it so far, although I haven't put it through any hunting situations yet. Time will tell.
Pros
On and off button, smaller remote, tone and vibration, small and sleek design
