The Reality:
First of all, force fetch is more than just one thing. It is a definable process with clear goals. But within the process are several steps or phases. Those steps will be laid out later, but first, let's examine the goals.
To establish a standard for acceptable mouth habits
To provide the trainer with a tool to maintain those habits
To provide the trainer with a tool to assure compliance with the command to retrieve
To form the foundation for impetus (momentum)
Mouth habits include such important items as fetching on command, even when your dog may be distracted, moody, or any number of things that might interfere with compliance. Sure, you may get away for years without having such problems, but being smart and being lucky is not the same thing. Force fetch gives you a tool to handle this when it comes up, plus some insurance that it is less likely to come up due to this training.
Along with compulsion issues we need to mention a proper hold and delivery on command. If my pheasant is punctured, I want it to be from pellets, not teeth. That actually covers some ground in all of the first three categories.
Great book to learn how to introduce fetch right from the start.

I like the book so far. Since my dog is a pointer I changed making him sit to a whoa. Other than that that it is an excellent guide to getting your dog to consistently retrieve.

This is a very good book on force fetching a dog. This book gave me the confidence and knowledge to force fetch my first retriever. I also purchased the DVD and they both go hand in hand. If your new to dog training this is what you want.

It's kind of early to really get a complete picture since I haven't had it very long, but I did read it and it seems like a balanced approach in practice. The part on how some have left the heeling stick as a tool and gone to the newer, more flexible e-collars was an example of how he doesn't present a method as the only way to do it and I appreciate the need to demonstrate flexibility since every dog is different and needs to be handled accordingly. Also, he clearly doesn't advocate being cruel or heavy handed, which is nice.
