Drew: Hi, I'm Drew Keeth with Honey Brake, here with good friends Steve Snell from Gun Dog Supply and Joe Perron from Champion Retrievers. Today we're going to talk about the use of draglines and check cords.

Joe: The reason we use check cords and draglines is so that we don't lose control of our dog. We can keep them in the area that we want to train them on.

Steve: Drew, we like a small snap for a young dog, about a six foot rope, small size on the rope. We call it a dragline because it's something that we want the dog to have on him the majority of the time, especially when they're off leash. That way you've got the ability to reach down, pick it up, get control over that dog without having to give a command and not being able to enforce it.

As the dog gets older we're going to move up to a larger rope with a bigger snap, longer length, around 30 feet. That way when you are working on single retrieves and close work, you've got the ability to have control over that dog, to bring them back into you when you need to.
