Steve Says: Alfa .32 Caliber Blank Pistol

Transcript from Steve's Video:

We're looking at the Alpha blank pistols. Alpha is a large-frame blank pistol. It's built on an actual gun frame, so it's got a lot of weight to it, a lot of feel. One of my favorite things about all the Alphas is that they come with orange handles, which makes them easy to find when you drop them in the field. They've also got the orange plug, which is required on a blank pistol.

Alpha is a swing-out cylinder. What that means is you have a button to press. And when you open it up it stays in the cylinder. It has an ejector so that when your blanks are out you can fire them out. Comes with a lanyard ring, which I highly recommend that you strap it to yourself once it's in your holster. This is a large frame pistol. It will fit any of our large frame holsters.

The Alpha comes in three different calibers. This is the .22 caliber. This is the .209 primer. And this is the .32 caliber.

I prefer the .22 because you have three different volumes of blanks that you can use. You can use the small crimp blanks. You can use a medium crimp. And then you can use the loud Winchester .22 short blanks. So that gives you an increase in volume, which is great when you are working with a puppy.

The .209 is probably the most popular we sell, and that's got to do with the price of the blanks. .22 caliber blanks are a little on the expensive side as far as per shot, where .209 primers are a good bit cheaper. The downside of .209 primers is that they are harder to come by because they cannot easily be shipped. So if you are getting a .209 pistol, you need to make sure that you can buy the primers locally. It's just a standard shotgun primer. I prefer CCI's. Most gun stores are going to have them, places that specialize in reloading.

.32 is the least used of the ones that we sell, and a lot of that has to do with the blanks. They are for track and field and for field trials. Certain pointing dog field trials require a .32 caliber blank. I generally do not recommend them for folks that are dog training. The blanks are incredibly expensive.

All three of the Alpha pistols are what are called double action pistols. What double action means is that you can either cock the pistol and then fire it or you can fire it without cocking it.

All of the Alphas come with a hard-shell case. They also come with a cleaning rod. Highly recommend that you keep your blank pistols clean. Typically, if we see problems with them it's folks that just fire them all the time and never bother to clean them off. Any standard gun solvent is going to take care of them. It also depends on the blanks that you fire. The .22 shots are a very dirty blank and they require that you clean it on a more regular basis.

I switch back and forth. With young puppies I use a .22 caliber because I can get that quiet. With older dogs I use a .209. Most people are not going to want that. So a lot of it depends on what you are doing. If you are using a .209 with puppies you just want to back off from them a good bit more and gradually introduce them to the gunfire. I would not take a .209 primer. A .209 primer is almost as loud as a .22 short. It might be as loud as a .22 short. For most people, the .22 is really the way to go. It just depends on how many blanks you are firing.

These pistols cover all of our upland and retriever folks. And really good for rabbit hunters, coon hunters. Anybody that's going to be shooting around a dog, they need to gradually introduce the sound of gunfire to them. And blank pistols are the best way to do that. They're much safer than using an actual load. So you want to gradually introduce gunfire. We've got a couple articles on the website about that.

***Also a Great Track and Field Starter Gun!
May 4, 2023
This is my second time purchasing this product from Gun Dog Supply. Quality Product! I had other Track and Field officials ask me where I purchased it and happily shared that info. I will continue to buy from Gun Dog Supply - they are easy to work with, knowledgeable, and shipping was fast.
Pros
  • From a Track and Field starter perspective only - it was consistent, reliable, and plenty loud! No issues jamming. Thank you again Steve Snell

Great trainer/starting pistol
March 15, 2023
I mainly have used this for track and field starts and this has been a fantastic purchase. Ease of use and weight of the unit is stop on. After a couple dozen starts, there are no complaints.
Pros
  • Gun Dog Supply is a great company to purchase through! Will be buying more.
Cons
  • Had some issue with miss firing the blanks. After looking into everything and trying the blanks in a different starter, found nothing was wrong with the unit. It was a bad batch of blanks.

The Best Starter's Pistol Currently on the Market
June 7, 2022
I own two Alpha 32 starter's pistols. They are well-made and easy to use. I found that Gun Dog Supply easily has the best price for this starter's pistol when I was looking to purchase a spare.
Pros
  • 1) Easy loading and unloading of 32 blanks;
  • 2) six-shell capacity instead of the typical five;
  • 3) well-balanced.
Cons
  • 1) Can't tell how many live shells are left in the cylinder;
  • 2) difficult to get some cleaning tools/tips in the chambers.

The Alfa 32 caliber and 22 caliber are the current "go to" pistols for track and field starting. They are durable and reliable and with proper care, can last a lifetime. Being my first purchase of one of these pistols, I searched far and wide on the internet for a good source. I was lucky to find and purchase one from Gun Dog Supply located in Massachusetts; GDS is owned and operated by the Snell family. The service is beyond "old time excellent"....and it's the kind of treatment that takes you back in time to the old days when customer service was number one and oftentimes made the difference between those companies that operated solely on lowest price and those companies that charged a fair price but backed up their products with EXCELLENT service. My starting partner just asked me last Saturday where I bought my pistol and without hesitation I told him "Gun Dog Supply", "check them out on the internet", "you won't be disappointed". Thanks for an excellent product at a great price and mostly for the "off the charts" customer service.
Pros
  • excellent product
  • good price
  • fast, efficient service
  • personal touch
Cons
  • none

Worked great... at first.
June 2, 2021
Had the gun for about 6 years now and use it for starting track races. When I first got the .32 cal. I had few issues unless I didn't clean it well. Now it seems like it I can't make it passed 1 shot without getting jammed due to paper wods from the shells getting stuck in the chamber. I do not recommend this gun. If it didn't have the narrowed chamber in the cylinder then I would recommend this to anyone. When it worked it was a great gun but would only take about 20 shells before it needed thorough cleaning.
Pros
  • Connected cylinder
  • Ejection plate to remove shells from cylinder
  • Comfortable grip
  • Directed muzzle to point the fired powder away from the user.
Cons
  • Gets jammed easily.
  • Hard to clean and ruins cleaning brushes for barrel because if awkward size of chamber.
  • If a paper wod is stuck inside the chamber then it's hard to open.
  • Due to its size chamber it does not allow all types of .32 blanks to be used. More specifically you cannot use the plastic crimped shells.

I am a track and field starter. I ordered the Alfa .32 Caliber Blank Starter Pistol for starting races. I do love the Alfa and would recommend it to T and F Officials. Note that one needs to be careful of the opening at the end of the barrel when firing it. It even fires the crimp type of blanks. Thanks Gun Dog Supply.

Hi GunDog. I am a starter who works in the DC area officiating track and field meets. I needed a starter pistol for that purpose. I have ordered two starter pistols from your company. They both works like a charm. There are some new blanks out there and don't work with some starter pistols. The one that I recently bought from you fires them without a problem. Great starter pistols.

I didn't buy the gun for training dogs, just for starting track meets, but if what you're looking for is a loud sound, you certainly will have that in spades. The workings of the pistols are smooth and it will work flawlessly.

As a track official, I was using an older starting pistol that did not work well with Pyro shells. The Alfa .32 worked great at the two meets I did with it. It is much easier to load and remove shells, and there are no loose parts.

This is my 2nd alpha .32. I also have an alpha .22. I am a track official and use the alpha's to start races, the .32 for outdoors, and the .22 for indoors. My first one (purchased 8 years ago) is in the shop getting repaired. That is why I have two .32's. Lifetime guarantee. Gun Dog Supply has the best price of any Alpha I have seen. Great service. I ordered on Saturday night, and the gun was at my house on Wednesday.

I use it for starting track meets. It's the only gun I could find. The swing out cylinder is very cumbersome. It is also hard to close the cylinder so it is fully engaged. Maybe because it's new? (I hope) In general, I don't like it as much as my old NEF starter pistol. As stated before, I wasn't able to find any other choices. These guns are probably like the .32 cal. blanks, not many made anymore.
