Steve Says: Alfa .22 Caliber Blank Pistol

    Transcript from Steve's Video:

We're looking at the Alpha blank pistols. Alpha is a large-frame blank pistol. It's built on an actual gun frame, so it's got a lot of weight to it, a lot of feel. One of my favorite things about all the Alphas is that they come with orange handles, which makes them easy to find when you drop them in the field. They've also got the orange plug, which is required on a blank pistol.

Alpha is a swing-out cylinder. What that means is you have a button to press. And when you open it up it stays in the cylinder. It has an ejector so that when your blanks are out you can fire them out. Comes with a lanyard ring, which I highly recommend that you strap it to yourself once it's in your holster. This is a large frame pistol. It will fit any of our large frame holsters.

The Alpha comes in three different calibers. This is the .22 caliber. This is the .209 primer. And this is the .32 caliber.

I prefer the .22 because you have three different volumes of blanks that you can use. You can use the small crimp blanks. You can use a medium crimp. And then you can use the loud Winchester .22 short blanks. So that gives you an increase in volume, which is great when you are working with a puppy.

The .209 is probably the most popular we sell, and that's got to do with the price of the blanks. .22 caliber blanks are a little on the expensive side as far as per shot, where .209 primers are a good bit cheaper. The downside of .209 primers is that they are harder to come by because they cannot easily be shipped. So if you are getting a .209 pistol, you need to make sure that you can buy the primers locally. It's just a standard shotgun primer. I prefer CCI's. Most gun stores are going to have them, places that specialize in reloading.

.32 is the least used of the ones that we sell, and a lot of that has to do with the blanks. They are for track and field and for field trials. Certain pointing dog field trials require a .32 caliber blank. I generally do not recommend them for folks that are dog training. The blanks are incredibly expensive.

All three of the Alpha pistols are what are called double action pistols. What double action means is that you can either cock the pistol and then fire it or you can fire it without cocking it.

All of the Alphas come with a hard-shell case. They also come with a cleaning rod. Highly recommend that you keep your blank pistols clean. Typically, if we see problems with them it's folks that just fire them all the time and never bother to clean them off. Any standard gun solvent is going to take care of them. It also depends on the blanks that you fire. The .22 shots are a very dirty blank and they require that you clean it on a more regular basis.

I switch back and forth. With young puppies I use a .22 caliber because I can get that quiet. With older dogs I use a .209. Most people are not going to want that. So a lot of it depends on what you are doing. If you are using a .209 with puppies you just want to back off from them a good bit more and gradually introduce them to the gunfire. I would not take a .209 primer. A .209 primer is almost as loud as a .22 short. It might be as loud as a .22 short. For most people, the .22 is really the way to go. It just depends on how many blanks you are firing.

These pistols cover all of our upland and retriever folks. And really good for rabbit hunters, coon hunters. Anybody that's going to be shooting around a dog, they need to gradually introduce the sound of gunfire to them. And blank pistols are the best way to do that. They're much safer than using an actual load. So you want to gradually introduce gunfire. We've got a couple articles on the website about that.

Great for teaching my dog about gun shot sounds. I maybe should have started with a lower load as it was quite loud for him. Used CCI #5, my bad. The cylinder release is a little hard to get used to and operate, but time will loosen up things.
    Pros
    • Well built

    • Stiff cylinder release

Blank Gun Use With Bird Dogs
    November 24, 2024
This blank gun is just the right noise level for working a blank gun with bird dogs. It is heavy built and durable. I shoot a lot and blank guns in the past last about 2 years. I have a video I'd like to send you of my pointing dogs Bea honoring Massi's point, flush of the bird and firing of the blank gun purchased through you guys. Problem is it needs to be transferred text to come out clear. My phone number is 609-374-2645. If you text me I'll return a copy of the event where everything the dogs did made me happy.

Does the Job - Very Well

I got this to use as a track and field starter.

The first .22 starter pistol I bouught (not from Gun Dog Supply) was a piece of junk.

This is solid, loud, and easy to use.

The only downside, and I knew this going in, was that the blanks can sometimes wiggle out a little if you hold the gun up in the air.

I wish I had bought this one a few years ago and saved myself the frustration.
    Pros
    • Solid build
    • Loud
    • Easily visible
    • Quality Brand
    • Good price
    • Fast shipping
    Cons
    • 6 shots instead of 8
    • smaller blanks can start to come out of the openings

    Worked Perfectly
    April 15, 2024
I bought this item to replace a broken starter pistol for track meets. It works perfectly and I could not have asked for a better product. The price was the best I saw on the internet. Other sites had this priced at a $100 more that Gun Dog supply.
    Pros
    • Easy to load, easy to clean, easy to operate.
    Cons
    • I have not noted any.

    Quality at Affordable Price
    August 17, 2022
I just purchased my fifth Alfa, with the first purchase several years ago for myself and the subsequent purchases being for a small retriever club I belong to in SE PA. These guns are of a robust quality and they are worth the price. I have purchased other brands in the past for less but they began to consistently fail after minimal use.
    Pros
    • Robust parts and orange grip so it stands out. Single and double action.
    Cons
    • Don't try to take this gun apart to clean the insides unless you know what you are doing. It has few springs that need to be pinned in place before you take the side plate off. (which is my reason for four stars instead of two)

Own the same model in 209. Could not find 209 primers due to ammo shortage. 209 version has worked flawless for over 5 years. 22 version fires ramset shot without any problems.

Dog Training 22 cal blank pistol
    March 24, 2021
This pistol is quality, quality, quality!!!

Some time ago, I purchased another brand (foreign manufacture) 22 cal dog training pistol and had continuous difficulty with miss fire, problems with rotation of cylinder, on and on. I managed to get thru initial stages of exposing my pup to gun fire but was thoroughly disgusted with the pistol. I tried to contact the company > no response. I have a new pup coming and need a reliable training pistol.
The Alfa handles, literally, the same as a regular revolver, weight, function, etc. It is expensive but well worth the price.

Everything I hoped it would be. No it's not a colt python action, but it works well. The leather holster is in the same vein. Solid and well built for the money. Weighs like a real gun, which I personally don't mind.
    Pros
    • Built solid, cycles well.
    Cons
    • Heavyish, and wouldn't mind 8 round capacity vs 6.

I bought the Alfa .22 caliber starter pistol and I am impressed with the overall quality of the pistol. I needed a reliable starter pistol, because when training dogs timing is everything, and cheaper pistols will let you down and you'll miss the precise training moment with cheaper equipment. The Alfa works very well, and in all conditions. The extra cost is money well spent.
    Pros
    • Safety Orange color
    • Nice storage case
    • Secure lanyard attachment

Love the orange handle and the tie ring on the bottom - although none of us ever drop and lose our training pistols, right. The gentleman I spoke with was very knowledgeable and the ordering was straightforward and easy. I had the gun in a couple of days. Thanks.

The .22 model is junk The 209 primer model is much better
    August 26, 2020
I returned my original .22 alfa because after firing it, the spent casing do not come out of the cylinder without using something to force them out. After receiving a replacement .22 and shooting several different mfg blanks, the same thing. Shoot one round and you can not extract the casing without force. So frustrating! Buyer beware.

Review for Alfa .22 Caliber Double Action Blank Starter / Training Pistol
    July 19, 2016
I'm a Starter for Track and Field races, and that's the primary use of my Alfa .22 caliber blank starter. I just put 150 blanks through it, July 16, 2016, and it worked flawlessly. I used BOTH, crimped and blank cartridges, and both worked great. One note, if you use 'crimps' you'll need to point the barrel down, or horizontal to the ground to prevent the crimps from moving. I gave it '4-Stars' because I've only used it once. However, after cleaning it, I don't expect any problems and look forward to using in the upcoming track seasons.
