This is the SportDOG 825. This is actually one of my collars. I've been using this off and on for the last six months. The 425 is probably one of our most popular collars. This is the big brother of the 425. The 825 has a very similar setup as far as stimulation modes and training options. The difference between them is range. This is a half mile range system compared to about 500 yards on the 425.
I prefer it especially for birddog folks. 500 yards is a little tight for a birddog in my opinion. And so, for not that much more money you can get the extra range and still have all the same features.
The other thing that I like about the 825 is that the transmitter is a little bit bigger. It fits in my hand just a little bit better than the 425. I've been happy with the 425. It feels good. But the dial and the size of it is just a little bit better for me. So, somebody that's looking for just a little bit more in a collar, this is the route to go.
I really like the size of the collar. It's small. It's going to fit most dogs really well. Exact same size collar as you've got in the 425. So, difference in range is going to be right here in the transmitter.
I've been using it especially on my Lab. It covers a lot of different stimulation choices. It's a seven level collar. It has tone. It also has vibration. And it has the vibration and tone on the dial, which that option allows you to have both tone and vibration at the same time in several different mode setups. And then when you move up your stimulation levels, you still have tone on the side, but you have stimulation on your dial. When you are set on a 2, now you've got stimulation.
This collar is setup in how it comes out of the box, which is seven levels of continuous, seven levels of momentary, and then vibration on the dial and tone on the side. So it covers a lot of different things. It's right under $200. This is a $199.99 collar. Just a really great all around system.
One of the other features that these have is the ability to change stimulation on the collar. This is something that SportDOG has that nobody else has. When you buy this collar and you take it out of the box, it's going to be in what's called their medium stimulation setting. If you have a very sensitive dog and you need to turn it down, then they have a low stimulation option. Doesn't change anything on the transmitter, but what it does is it changes the output on the collar. It steps everything down. So, for a really sensitive dog, you have that as an option. It's one of the differences between this collar and the higher end units like the 1225 or the 1825. On the 1825 collar you have a low setting, a medium setting, and a high setting. So this is a little bit different in that mode operation from the 1825.
The majority of the dogs that I've worked with, with the SportDOG system, the medium setup works great. Out of all of my dogs, I don't have anybody that uses a low stim setup. I only have one dog that uses a high stim setup. So most dogs are going to get by with the medium. But if you need to dial it down you've got that as an option.
Just an all-around great collar. SportDOG knows how to make dials better than anybody. And that's a big deal for me. If you are used to a dial on a transmitter and you prefer that over some of the newer setups that we have, if a dial is what you are looking for, SportDOG makes the best dials. They feel great and it's probably my favorite thing about this particular collar. It's just a really well-made dial. So, neat collar. Works really well. I've enjoyed using them.
Love this collar. My 18 month old un-neutered male lab works with me all day at our horse rehabilitation farm. He had started bolting every time I let him out. He would actually leave the farm and end up in surrounding neighborhoods. Hormones kicking in I'm sure! Was very worried he'd get killed in the road or stolen. It took about a week of de-bolting training on a long line with the SD collar. He's now off-leash and back to work all day with no problems. I like the 1/2 mile range too. If I get busy and lose sight of him it's quite easy, on the farm, for him to get that far away. There have been times I've toned for a full 3-4 mins and then see him come running. I'm sure he was at the back of the property. Very happy to have my dog back by my side! - Cindy Acosta, Terrapin Horse Center, NC

"Great experience in price, ordering, and delivery"
I compared the SportDOG SD-825 to a number of e-collars on-line and bought it based primarily on Steve's recommendation. An excellent collar; however, the training books and videos are important to assure you don't use the e-collar incorrectly. While our dog is primarily a pet, I have been working him on uplands and the range and response is fantastic.

My dog Otis is already trained, but can sometimes be very stubborn. We take him out hiking, so he can run off leash. He likes to chase deer and sometimes does not come back very promptly when called with a whistle. It only took a couple of times out with the collar, and he really listens, even with all the distractions of running free outdoors. The video and training pamphlet are excellent. Easy to understand instructions and easy to use control. Fast delivery and very competitive price. Plus you can call Gun Dog Supply if you have any questions or problems with your unit. That was the deciding factor to buy from them.

"I have only had it a few weeks and love them so far."
We recently adopted our dog to be a family companion and running partner. He is awesome, but his prey drive is over the top. He had put himself and me in some dangerous situations by chasing things (trains, for example). The collar works well and he has responded very quickly to it. He even wags his tail when he sees the collar, because he knows that we are about to head out for FUN. This particular model was recommended to me because it works well for dogs with longer hair. I also love the fact that there is a tone and vibration setting. I truly believe that this collar may save my dog's life some day.

Great training aid. When the collar goes on the attitude and focus change. Now that he felt the stim, when he doesn't listen I can use the tone as a warning, and it is more than enough to get his attention. The beeps alone change his attitude. Great piece of gear. Makes training a 3 month old Lab much easier.

The training collar worked great! It's easy to use. Good instructions. I had to only shock her 3 times starting at level 1 and went up to level 3 and then back down to level 2 to get her to be more obedient. I use the tone now to get her attention, and she is quite a smart dog, and knows that this means to come to me. Excellent product. Very happy with the purchase and the results. Worth every dollar!

This replaces a Tri-Tronics G50 which recently died. Pros: much more compact. The small collar fits my dog much better. Also, the default points are much longer than the default G50 or the Garmin Delta. My dog, while small, is jowly and has a lot of loose flesh around the neck. I did not need to go up to the long points with this collar, and I no longer have problems with the points getting lost in his jowls. The separate tone button is a good feature. Cons: a) sometimes it is hard to turn the collar on/off. There is no danger here of it accidentally getting turned off in the field Unfortunately, I'm not seeing a good way to correct this. Tri Tronics sometimes got turned off accidentally.b) I'm not fond of the rubber covers over the charging stations. I think the Tri Tronics way is better. Overall: it's a great system and I prefer it to its predecessor.

I have only had the collar for a few weeks, but so far it has vastly improved the quality of life of my dog (and myself)! We are avid hikers/climbers and are outside every weekend. After five or six weekends of having our dog run away during our hikes, we decided it was safer to not allow our dog to be off leash. This was not ideal for us or her (she is young, has lots of energy and is very independent). We've participated in training classes with three separate dog trainers to try to curb her habit of running away...all of the trainers overwhelmingly recommended trying an electric collar due to her extreme prey drive. I was wary at first, but after a few weeks of use, I think the collar is great. She has a much higher quality of life. We received training on how to use the collar through a local dog trainer and we practiced the technique before putting it to use. Now our dog can explore on her own during our hikes. Her recall is close to 100%, even when she is focused on prey. I really like this specific collar for numerous reasons. The remote is very user friendly. The dial to adjust the intensity is tough to move, which is good, because it will not accidentally shift up to a higher intensity. The collar itself appears comfortable--our dog does not have any problem wearing it for 4-5 hours at a time during longer hikes. She is a 45 pound Australian Kelpie mix and the size is perfect. It's as if it's not on her. I highly recommend this! I also highly recommend purchasing through Gun Dog Supply--after lots of online research, I concluded their price for this collar was competitive with all the other retailers and their level of service was excellent.

The SD 825 allows her freedom to roam while turning her attention to us immediately when we need it. Her recall has improved ten fold in the few days we've been using the collar and the Robin McFarland video was an invaluable addition to the overall package, offering a slightly different and, in my opinion, better methodology for implementing e collar stimulation with effective training technique.

We bought one last year for the new young dog, after he took off at the end of walk and went down to the town rec area to socialize. He was starting to refuse to come if there was another dog or walkers to play with. Collar was very effective with hardly any corrections, mostly just having the collar on and an occasional beep does the trick, on rare occasions, one correction. We bought this second one for our daughter. She does lots of long hikes, and worries about her otherwise obedient dog taking off on a scent and forgetting his voice command.

We have been training our 5 month old English Setter for about a week on this e-collar. Am very pleased with it. The factory setting range was medium, which even at a 1 was too strong for our dog, which has a pretty mild temperament. So we switch it to the low range setting and have found that 1, 2, and 3 seem to work well depending on the situation and what we are working on. There were 2 DVD's sent with the collar and we found them helpful to watch both of them, even though the training methods/philosophies don't align completely. The collar provides a sense of security that if she wanders too far from the house, it reinforces our command to come. Overall, love it and can't imagine trying to train without it. Looking forward to using it in the woods as well for bird hunting in the fall.

My 5 year old female Great Pyrenees is notorious for getting out of her yard - either chewing a hole through the mesh, climbing the gate (which is now electrified along with the rest of the fence) or digging under. Then, when called after getting out, she would run the other way. (Comes just fine when loose in the yard.) Just two weeks of intermittent observation and timely shocks have her staying in her yard and coming at a run when turned loose (admittedly a pretty rowdy training time, but well worth it). I trained and competed with obedience dogs for years and never needed a shock collar, but this dog is REALLY hard-headed. The collar performed every time and is easy to use. I recommend it for any trainer with a really difficult dog, but as with any type of training, timing is everything, especially with a shock collar because it leaves a permanent impression.

Instead of 7 different modes (not intensity levels - those are just fine), have just 2-3 different modes. Also, the charger receiver prongs in the collar and handset are tiny, and mine have already gotten bent when I tried to attach them to the charger. Perhaps just have a charging station to attach the collar to, rather than have to plug in both the collar and handset.

The SportDOG Sport Hunter SD 825 is an incredibly versatile training collar and a good choice for all-around use. The SportDOG Sporthunter SD 825 is a longer range version of the SD-425. It has all the features of the SD 425 but has a slightly larger transmitter with a more powerful antenna for longer range, perfect for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with medium range working dogs. Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof and submersible.
The 825 can be expanded to control up to three dogs by adding SportDOG Brand Add-A-Dog collars. The comfortable "soft coat" transmitter finish makes this unit a pleasure to handle.
The low continuous stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-825 are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.
You can customize your SportDOG Sport Hunter SD-825 to match your training preference. It comes set up in MODE-1 (a 7-level continuous + 7-level momentary stimulation one dog collar with non-stimulation tone button), but it can easily be changed into 7 different modes with different button configurations.
