One hour of BASIC OBEDIENCE training
from Pro Trainer Robin MacFarlane.
"I couldn't find what I wanted, so we had to build it."
There are three things that I’m looking for in a remote dog training system.
A wide choice of stimulation levels so you can find the precise level for your dog in any given situation.
Transmitter controls that allow one-handed no-look operation so that you can keep your eye on the dog and not fumble around with your transmitter trying to figure out how to use it.
A dog training program that teaches you step-by-step how to use your remote collar.
I'm looking for a system that is designed for folks that have little or no dog training experience so they can build a foundation of basic obedience so they can enjoy life with their dog.
We developed the 1325 mainly from a frustration of what was on the market. Over the last couple of years, several products have changed and a couple of products have gone away. And we looked up and really didn't have the intro collar that we were looking for. What we wanted just didn't exist anymore.
There were parts out there that we liked, but there just wasn't a complete package that fit everything that our customers needed. So we started looking around to see if we could do something about it.
SportDOG was the company that we went to first and basically said, "We're looking for these features. You have them, but they are spread out over several different products and we'd like to combine them." So we took one of the transmitters from their higher-end 1825 product, and then we took the collar from their 425/825 system.
These two pieces went together really well for me because of certain things that the transmitter had and certain things that the collar had.
The 1825 transmitter had the right selection of dials and buttons and it has a toggle switch on it. That was important to me. The size of it was also important. It's very comfortable for most folks. It fits really comfortably in the hand, has a really nice dial. That's important in the right feel for the transmitter.
The smaller collar was important to me. We deal with an enormous amount of small dogs. The advantage of a small collar is that you can use it on a small dog, but you can also use it on a large dog. And so, going with a smaller collar makes everybody happier.
SMOOTH STIM SCHEME
The other thing about that particular collar is that the STIM scheme in that collar is a lot smoother than some of the other collars on the market. It's a very gradual increase, and that's what I was looking for in a collar. Some of the other collars on the market had more of a jagged increase or they increased too rapidly. The smaller 425 collar had a very gradual increase in stimulation. It kinda fit what I was looking for.
One of the things that we've seen lately in a lot of the intro level collars is a lack of stimulation levels. Some of the systems have gone to a lower number of levels, yet they’ve kept the spread the same. What that does, let's say you go from a 10-level collar to a 7-level collar but the levels have not changed as far as highs and lows, you end up with more gaps in the system.
What we see occasionally is you'll have a dog on a 1, where the level is too low for him to feel and respond to, and then you move up to 2 and the increase is drastic enough where the dog actually overreacts.
So now you have a situation where the lowest level the dog doesn't feel and the next level up the dog overreacts to. There's no way to train a dog with a system like that.
Has really helped me. Most of time I use lowest setting vibrating mode, unless my Patch is excited. Happy so far with results. Hope to get more use in high stress situations. So far it's been great. Following instructional video has been so helpful.

I picked this SD 1325 because Steve at Gun Dog Supply recommended it. I wanted a collar with easy adjustments and a long range. I have not been disappointed. After owning this collar a month my 6 month old 80Lb Ridgeback pup has responded very well to training with this collar, and I keep a pocket full of treats too. It has been great for breaking her of some bad habits like chewing up my garden hoses while she thinks she is helping me move the sprinklers. Still working on getting her to quit attacking the the wheel barrow tire while I'm pushing it. She has improved in many other parts of her training too. I also tested the range by walking over a mile away with the collar in my hand while my son repeatedly pushed the button on controller from my driveway. It worked well for at least 3/4 of a mile as rated. I feel my dog and my family are much happier because our dog is quickly becoming well trained and quitting many bad habits. This collar helps my dog understand what I am trying to train her to do and not do. That makes us both happy in the long run. This collar has a very wide range of very gentle settings up to just enough that she can't ignore it when she really needs to stop what she is doing. I am very happy with this collar and all of my other purchases from Gun Dog Supply. Seems like a very good company to do business with. They have been quick to respond to all of my inquiries and very helpful. Robert Graydon Pottery

We have a German Shorthaired who would listen to commands while inside, but as soon as she would go outside she wouldn't listen, and there was no way to get her to come inside. I'm very pleased with this product, and the training video from Gun Dog Supply is such a great tool! Would suggest watching the video first! Now all I have to do is beep the remote and she comes bolting to me, which means I no longer have to be worried about being late to work. Thank you for this wonderful life saving product. Now we're working on off leash walking!!

This collar does the trick. It has more features than our last collar. I like having three options at my fingertips depending on the issue I am trying to correct. I'm using this on an 8 mo. old 78 lb. Dobie.

Ordered the 1325 due to having 14 levels of stim along with tone, vibrate, and being able to be submersible. After speaking to another hunter who uses the 425, he stated he liked it but wished it had more levels. Has been the best purchase I've ever made for my Lab. 9/10 times I only have to use tone and he comes running. Gun Dog Supply has the best service and along with the free ecollar DVD and check cord, it was just even better. You won't be sorry ordering.

When my neighbor's cows get on my land, Ernie helps me move them them back onto their own property. He needs to learn directions, but even still, he does a pretty good job gathering them together and he can get them moving. It's kind of like driving a car without a steering wheel. He will gladly obey my commands, like “Come” and such, but when there are other dogs, all of his attention goes to them. All my commands, to him, becomes just background noise. I am using this collar, with good results, to get his attention. Once we get over this distraction problem, I hope to continue using the collar to give him directional commands when herding. One bit of advice is that the manual describing the device should be read carefully. When I first put the collar on him, I put the intensity on the low “1” mark and gave the button a push. It lifted all four paws off the ground. Turns out, the collar has two intensity ranges – one low and the other …. not so low. After making sure the collar was within the low range, I found number 4 was enough to twitch his ears. We are working at that level, now. “When all else fails, read the instructions!”

Our dog is a howler not a barker, so we were concerned about an automatic collar not working for us. With this collar, we're able to correct him as we hear him. Every once and awhile when he just can't help himself he howls, but the audible normally reminds him to hush. We're very pleased with the results.

It has made a huge difference, results in the first 2 days! He would pull so hard on his leash, he actually hurt my wife's back. Now she walks him and he is well mannered and she controls him with ease! He enjoys his walks now, he isn't pulling and choking himself. We are working towards off leash in the yard and will no doubt get there!

Charlie is the eleventh Airedale that I've owned. He is the most stubborn and set in his ways Airedale that I've trained. He constantly needs some training reinforcement. This SportDog SD-1325 is a replacement for another SportDog model that had less range. This model does everything I needed and more. The tone mode, which my other Sportdog didn't have, is all that's normally required to keep this long ranging Airedale aware of his responsibility. It's an excellent product with fast charging and long lasting battery charges.

I had trouble recalling my dog at the end of a run or hunt. She was recalling with the collar on after 1 day. She was recalling without the collar after 2 weeks of training. I plan to use this every time I take her out. I will also try this collar on other obedience training where she knows what to do, but does not want to do it.

I am new to using E-Collars, and I probably would have been too scared to use it if I had not been to the Rick Smith seminar, but the combination has transformed my dogs and my life. She has totally stopped bolting. I can take her anywhere and don't have to worry about her running away or in the street. She can play and run under control. I do not know how this collar compares to others, but for me it has done the job.

This unit will last a long time. Love It! Thanks!

She is 1 1/2 years. Typical lab, lots of energy. After a few days of just putting the collar on and not using it, she now knows it's play time before training. My stress level has been lowered, as now I know she is under control. Wish I would had purchased long ago! Works great and is very simple to use.

Steve's Collar and website are excellent. If you need a remote collar, do your research on his site, and pick his custom, or recommended collar. Great extras in the kit! My dog has only received 5 static corrections at the lowest level during initial training. Follow the training suggestions and be consistent. This is my first online review, an indication of how pleased I am with their product and service.

I like the fact that it has such a fast charge capability. I may not be the brightest bulb, as it took me a few minutes to actually figure the different mode settings. Once done, it all made sense. I primarily use the vibration feature to call him to me. He is somewhat aggressive, so the stimulate feature is nice for a backup to interrupt his locked in mode, then he comes back right away. Nice to be able to give him the freedom to run while still exercising control. I do prefer this model over the Dogtra 300M which we also have, and works well for our other dog.

Collar works great! Stim levels increase in small enough increments that 1L to 1H is enough to make a difference. Handheld unit is well laid out and easy to use without taking your eye off the dog. If it had a bark collar function as well, it'd be perfect!

I only have one dog so it is more than I need but it was such a good deal I chose it. It works as advertised and that's what I need. I like being able to use tone and vibrate without moving the dial. This multi dog model doesn't allow it because it's designed for multiple dogs. I do recommend the product and am happy with my purchase.

Took this unit on a 3 day duck hunt, and it was in and out of the water all 3 days. No issues. I really like the size of the receiver collar. As advertised very smooth steps in stimulation. My pup only got to 4 low in the low collar setting. Hope it lasts but too early to tell. Would have given it 5 stars if it came with a case. It's a pain to haul it around all separate. Thanks Gun Dog Supply. Great price for the product. I'm satisfied.

I like this product as it is helping me reinforce the basic commands that I have trained. My 1 year old Spaniel is 90% consistent with her commands in the house and on leash but off leash with distractions she behaves as if she was never trained. We begin hunting redients training in a few weeks and my hope is stronger obedience by my puppy. The training video with Robin MacFarlane has been a great tool because it demonstrates the training with dogs of different ages and obedience levels. So far l am very happy with the training progression on my dog..

Works great, no problems so far. The only thing I would change is the addition of a second D ring on the collar directly across from the one that is currently behind the buckle. This would allow the extra strap to be better secured when it wraps around a young dog's neck.

I purchased this collar for a dog that is a chronic puller. Head halters, no pull harnesses, training and classes haven't improved the pulling very much. I was getting frustrated with my dog and avoiding situations where he would pull me. I always thought an ecollar/shock collar was cruel, but after nothing else has worked I started doing some research. I purchased the collar and almost cancelled the order immediately after. The thought of shocking my dog really upset me, but after getting the collar and watching the DVD we tried it on ourselves. After using it on the dog and seeing the good response from him I feel it is a good training tool, and kinder than yanking on him and getting mad/frustrated. I like that it is completely measured and consistent. Something a manual leash correction is not. The only thing I would stress to anyone using this type of training tool is to use it just as that. A tool. Not a substitute for good training. Also, I use positive reinforcement and the clicker along with the ecollar. I use a verbal command/warning instead of the collars tone/vibrate before pressing the button to shock because I do not want to rely on the collar forever. I am using it for a specific behavior and while the dog is on leash so this works well for me. ANY training tool can be cruel and abusive if not used properly and this one must be used with intelligence and some education. It is not a quick fix. Product is well made and easy to use. Nice and small so fits a smaller dog well, and my dog doesn't seem to mind the collar. I put it on from behind the dog, so he doesn't see it. I want him to think any collar means he has to listen and respect. So far so good. Thank you Steve for the information you provide your customers! We are enjoying our walks and hope to get back to the competition arena soon.

This collar is definitely not as effective as my old Tri Tronics collar. I've tried multiple settings and both sets of contacts, but it is only effective about 50% of the time. I couldn't believe that I had to use the long contacts on a short haired dog, but the short contacts did not work at all. My dog is very sensitive to stimulation. I used to set my transmitter on level 1 to get a response from him. Now I have to use at least level 3 on this new collar to get any response from him at all. I should have stayed with the brand I've trusted for the past 15 years.

Although I liked the ergonomics of the transmitter and only 7 levels of stimulation to deal with, it was inadequate for my high drive big dogs. I test the stimulation levels by placing the points on the inside of my wrist, the soft skin and could not even feel any stimulation for the levels 1 and 2. Was not until I hit a 3 that I got anything significant. That said, my male in training at 21 months of age was not showing any adverse response at a 7, so I traded it in on a Dogtra product and am getting the higher levels of stimulation I need when in High distraction environments.

The SportDOG Field Trainer SD 1325 is an incredibly versatile training collar and a good choice for all-around use. The SportDOG SD 1325 is ideal for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with close-working dogs. Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof and submersible.
The 1325 can be expanded to control up to six dogs by adding SportDOG Brand Add-A-Dog collars. The comfortable "soft coat" transmitter finish makes this unit a pleasure to handle.
The low continuous stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-1325 are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.
You can customize your SportDOG Field Trainer SD-1325 to match your training preference. It comes set up in MODE-1 (a 14-level continuous + 7-level momentary stimulation two dog collar with non-stimulation tone on the dial), but it can easily be changed into different modes with different button configurations.

It's smart -- The SD-1325 has a Low Battery Detect Indicator to make sure you don't get out in the field with a dead battery, and a built-in LED Battery Charge Indicator which lets you know when your transmitter is finished charging.
No holster required -- The SD-1325 transmitter is small enough to hang on a lanyard or clip on your belt with the built in Belt Clip.
It's about the size of a small walkie-talkie or large cell phone -- The compact SD-1325 remote transmitter only weighs 4.8 ounces and measures 7" x 2.12" x 1.12" with antenna.
Built-in TOGGLE SWITCH -- Easy to upgrade to up to 6 dogs. Select between color-coded straps when using with more than one dog.
The SportDOG 1325 gives you the option of customizing the transmitter to fit YOUR needs. It also allows you the option of changing the stimulation setup as your needs change or if you want different options in different situations.

Change MODES in seconds by setting the transmitter dial and toggle switch to the mode you want. Next press the recessed button on the back of the transmitter.
