"What does Paul Long say about it?" is the question often asked by most serious trainers. This book highlights the guidance of this master dog trainer. In simple question-and-answer format, Long answers the questions most asked.

  • Should I try to train my dog myself?
  • Do I need to use a whistle?
  • How do I deal with a dog who sulks after correction?
  • When should I breed my male dog?
  • How do I stop my dog from barking at night without cause?
  • What should I do if my dog will point a dead bird but not pick up and retrieve it?

Paul Long's answers to these question are practical and filled with the good sense and subtle, wry humor of a wily veteran.

  • Steve Says: Long: Training Pointing Dogs

    Transcript from Steve's Video:

Today we're looking at "Training Pointing Dogs" by Paul Long. This is one of the classics for pointing dogs. It's a book that was written back in the early '70s. Paul Long was a Setter man. It's one of those books that's old school. It's a short book. I've enjoyed it. It covers a lot of different things in a real quick method. They reshot the cover a few years ago with a German Shorthair on it, but Paul Long was known as the Setter man. Pointing dog books are pointing dog books. You can train an English Pointer, English Setter, a German Shorthair Brittney all with the same techniques. So that really doesn't matter.

Just a classic in the field. I recommend it. It's a quick read and covers a lot of the basics. It is not a modern book. His e-collar stuff is a little dated. But it's one of those books that there's some thoughts in there that you may not see everywhere. And I recommend everybody check it out.

Some good information. But mostly old school. 1st edition and Second edition are identical.

Great book, full of tips and tricks that will expedite your training process exponentially. Being an older book it doesn't try to spoon feed you all that positive reinforcement on stuff. But provides excellent tips for corrections that will help you avoid damaging heavy handed tactics that will cause your pup to lose trust in you. Worded straightforward in common sense lingo that even us common folks can understand easily. Also provides a lot of easy, inexpensive tactics for fixing scores of commonplace hunting dog problems. Must have book for training a new dog, in my opinion.

It was an easy read as stated before, but a little outdated. He addressed some topics such as quartering, but did not really cover much other than depends on where the was bred at...north or south. I was hoping there would have more on retrieval. The heel portion was good and some pointers with a few techniques such as introducing the E collar. I think scents are more obtainable than actual birds these days, which make a difference. All in all, not a bad book, but not complete.

Not done yet, but what I have seen, I like so far. My GSP is just 11 months, and we have some work ahead of us in field and agility.
